This cabochon of Michigan Copper is found in Epidote matrix. There are lots of small specs of shiny copper. The Epidote Copper Mine is in Keweenaw, Michigan. Historically the site has been associated with the Keweenaw Copper Mining District which is now part of the Isle Royale Wilderness. Copper is one of the most famous and useful metals, and has been important since ancient civilizations for ornaments and coinage. Its complex crystals can be beautifully formed in odd and unique masterpieces that are treasured by collectors. Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula is the most important locality in the world for pure native copper. Mining began in 1845 and continued until 1968 and over 5 million tons of refined copper were recovered from Michigan's copper mines.
